Interview with Ben Hibon

Interview with Ben Hibon, director of the animated series Heavenly Sword

IT’S ART: From your first short movie to Heavenly Sword how do you think your creative process has evolved?

Ben Hibon: I guess my creative process differs for every project, from my first personal short film to my latest commercial film. The difference between creating your own project and working on a commercial one is how you juggle between your own ideas, the commercial brief and the client’s expectations. The best projects happen when these three factors are fulfilled simultaneously, but obviously it’s never that simple.

My ideas and tastes have certainly changed over time as I learned more about the different animation techniques and story mechanics. In the beginning I had to create my own films entirely by myself so I was very limited by my skills as an animator. Now I work with different production teams, so when I read a script or a brief I know pretty much anything can be achieved, from live action to 2D to CG. Now, when I start a new project, I have many different creative opportunities to express my ideas and concepts. My “universe” has really opened up and these days I have the chance to collaborate with great talents and creators. That’s definitely the biggest change in the way I work.

IA: If you should have to define your graphic style, what would you say?

BH: I generally design and create concept artworks for all my films. I guess my graphical style is very much a result of years of drawing. Over time my style has become more defined by strong deformations of proportions and graphical stylization. I used to draw graphic novels when I was younger so there is of course a huge influence there. And certainly cinema has always been a great influence. From very early on I’ve been fascinated by the way contrast in Akira Kurosawa’s black and white films was used to define shapes, moods and atmosphere
